Next-gen Radeon Prototype of the Radeon RX 6000

AMD Big Navi Radeon RX 6000 GPU are coming
Radeon RX 6000 GPU Series

Even though the graphics card segment is currently focused on the GeForce RTX 3090, RTX 3080 and RTX 3070, it is slowly becoming more serious about AMD’s competitors. Yesterday, AMD itself named October 28 as the launch date of Big Navi and now a first image has appeared on the Internet.

As usual, it must be mentioned that the message is a rumor. Although the chance is high that it is not a fake, this cannot be excluded. Accordingly, any information and suspicions should be treated with caution until the official presentation at the end of October.

16 GB of Samsung are installed

On the picture you can see a built-in graphics card in a housing, which is primarily the back of the PCB and some of the cooler. It is obvious that the picture shows an early prototype that is still far from being completed. The PCB is still equipped with DIP switches and several connections (presumably for diagnostic purposes), which are not available on a normal graphics card. And the cooler also has nothing to do with a series variant: Apparently, in this case, a CPU cooler with an adapted mount for cooling the GPU was simply mounted on the board.

The most interesting on the picture are the memory modules. There should be eight of them, altogether they should result in 16 GB capacity. This is written on a sticker on the board, which bears the label Typical Samsung 16GB - the memory would be from Samsung.

Another sticker speaks of Full ? Typical XT A0 ASIC, the second word is not decipherable. "XT" is AMD usual term for a full-scale development of a GPU, which also indicates a model of the gaming division. Equally interesting are the two visible power plugs, one of which is cut off in the picture. An 8-pin power plug is installed on the card, the other could be another 8-pin or a 6-pin power plug.

An assessment by the editorial team

If the image actually shows a Radeon RX-6000 graphics card, it offers 16 GB of memory on a 256-bit interface. If this is the right "Big Navi", the RDNA-2 flagship with the Navi-21-GPU, it would be disappointing. With such a model, AMD might attack the GeForce RTX 3070, but not the GeForce RTX 3080.

However, it currently seems that many previous rumors are not about Navi 21, but the next smaller chip Navi 22. This would also fit 256 bit and 16 GB, while the flagship would fit a maximum of 24 GB and 384 bit. That there will be such a variant, although the editorial office considers likely, it can not be excluded that even the largest Big Navi will offer only 256 bit and 16 GB. This will be resolved in about a month and a half.
