The next SSD with the new phison controller E18 is known. The HOF Extreme SSD from the manufacturer Galax (formerly Galaxy) is expected to achieve peak transfer rates of 7,000 MB/s reading and 6,850 MB/s writing via PCIe 4.0 x4. The values correspond to those of the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus and should generally apply to SSDs with Phison E18.

Phison E18 for faster PCIe-4.0 SSD

Phison offers SSD manufacturers not only the controller, but a complete reference platform for SSDs based on it. This was already the case with the first consumer SSDs with PCIe 4.0 x4: All use the Phison E16 (PS5016-E16) in conjunction with TLC-3D-NAND and deliver nearly identical performance values in the range of 5,000 MB/s reading and 4,400 MB/s writing at least on paper; Smaller differences due to adapted firmware are possible.

With the PS5018-E18 introduced a year ago, Phison has increased up to 7,000 MB/s and a million IOPS and has offered these values both reading and writing (in the SLC cache). The first products in the form of the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus and the Galax HOF Extreme SSD are supposed to reach the 7,000 MB/s in sequential reading, but are somewhat below this when writing. However, the promised write rate of 6,850 MB/s would be extremely fast and higher than the Samsung 980 Pro, which should write up to 5,000 MB/s.

HOF Extreme with up to 4 TB

According to a report from Asia, the HOF Extreme SSD will be offered with TLC-3D-NAND and storage capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB. The images show a heat sink made of aluminium with a high-gloss panel and the logo of the HOF series ("Hall of Fame"), which marks the top of the manufacturer’s portfolio and is aimed at enthusiasts. In this series, Galax already has a model with PCIe 4.0 and Phison E16 for up to 5,000 MB/s with the HOF Pro SSD, which uses a heavier heat sink.

Galax HOF Extreme SSD

At least in Asia, the HOF Extreme SSD with Phison E18 in the M.2 form factor will be released soon, details on market launch and prices are not available. However, availability in Germany is unlikely, because Galax sells its graphics cards under the brand KFA2 in Europe, but this does not apply to the SSDs so far.
