Quest with Oculus Link: Facebook to discontinue Oculus Rift series in 2021

Facebook today announced that it will discontinue Rift PC-based VR headset
Oculus coming out in 2020

Announcement of the Oculus Quest 2, Facebook announces the end of the Oculus Rift series from 2021. Until then, the sale of the Oculus Rift S will end and there will be no more pure PC-VR headset from Facebook and Oculus.

Quest 2 with Oculus Link as alternative

Facebook justifies the decision with the progress made on Quest 2 and with Oculus Link. Oculus Link (Preview) makes it possible to connect the Oculus Quest (2) via cable to the PC for rendering and to play PC-exclusive software. The Oculus Quest (2) can also be used with SteamVR for Half-Life: Alyx (Test). The Facebook compulsion applies to the Oculus Quest 2 nevertheless.

Official launch from autumn

With this step, Facebook is now releasing the Oculus-Link-Software in its final version and announces to end the beta in autumn. However, initial reports show that the higher resolution of the Quest 2 leads to clearly visible compression artifacts and that Oculus Link does not yet use the higher refresh rate of the Quest 2.
