Synology DS 1520 +: Four LAN ports for five hard drives
Synology DS 1520 + |
With the DS1520+, Synology presents the largest family member of the 20er Plus series. Like the DS1019+, the DS1520+ uses five hard drive bays and two M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs. The DX517 expansion unit can be used to add 10 additional hard drives.
The main processor is the DS1520+ an Intel Celeron J4125 with four cores and a base clock of 2.0 GHz, which can be raised in turbo mode up to 2.7 GHz. This processor is also used by Synology in the DS920+ (test) and DS720+ (test). For the main memory, Synology relies on a total of 8 gigabytes of DDR4 non-ECC, which consists of 4 gigabytes, which are soldered firmly on the board, and another 4 gigabytes, which are implemented as a SO-DIMM module. For comparison: The DS1019+ uses an Intel Celeron J3455 with 1.5 GHz base and 2.3 GHz turbo clock and 8 GB DDR3L non-ECC SO-DIMM.

Thanks to the new hardware base, PHP website access to the DS1520+ is expected to be more than twice as fast compared to the DS1019+ and computing tasks to be completed 16 percent faster.
Four 1 Gigabit LAN ports
The DS1520+ is equipped with four 1 Gigabit LAN ports that support link aggregation for bundling and increase reliability. The DS1019+ has only two 1 GbE ports. With activated link aggregation, Synology provides throughput rates of 451.28 MB/s (sequential reading) and 451.18 MB/s (sequential writing) for the DS1520+.
eSATA, USB 3.0 and btrfs
For the external ports for storage media, the DS1520+ uses two USB 3.0 ports and two eSATA ports - one more than the DS1019+. Two 92 92 25 mm fans at the rear of the NAS provide cooling for the components. In addition to ext4, the file system for the internal hard drives is also the copy-on-write file system btrfs with integrity check implemented, which increases data security and prevents data corruption.
The DS1520+ is now available at retail outlets. The recommended retail Price is 767.60 euros (including VAT). Synology grants a guarantee of three years.
