The free French operating system Voyager 20.04.1 is a resource-saving Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS (Focal Fossa) with a current Xfce desktop in the style of macOS. Like its popular Canonical substructure, Voyager relies on the Linux 5.4 operating system kernel.

A French Xubuntu with style

Basically, Voyager 20.04.1 LTS is an Ubuntu derivative in the style of Xubuntu 20.04.1 LTS with a current desktop of type Xfce 4.14.2, which is supported by the Avant Window Navigator ( AWN"), a program dock in the style of macOS, and Conky, a program for desktopWidgets, has been upgraded and should ensure improved ergonomics and operation.

In addition to the desktop tools and gadgets, the operating system brings more than 300 photographs, wallpapers and animations by freelance photographers and artists for the individual design of the desktopEnvironment with and still leaves an extremely narrow footprint on the system.

As part of a test installation, Voyager 20.04.1 LTS, which can be written to a USB storage medium and tested safely with tools such as Ventoy and Rufus as a live system, had less than 600 MB of RAM.

Ubuntu 20.04.1 as a modern foundation

Voyager 20.04.1 LTS inherits, like the updated and corrected point release of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and its seven official flavors", the various visual innovations, the updated Linux kernel 5.4 and the greatly improved HiDPI support by the so-called fractional scaling".

Like the "seven flavours", Voyager has already been upgraded to the LTS kernel 5.4 with the release of version 20.04 LTS of Linux 4.15 (v18.04 LTS) and Linux 5.3 (v19.10) respectively, providing free long term support up to and including April 2025.

This includes improved support for Microsoft’s exFAT file system, integration of the kernel lockdown feature, and support for AMD Navi and the Ryzen 4000U/H (Renoir) 7 nm APUs. The LTS version of the Linux kernel also provides improved performance for host file system access.

HDCP over modern AMD GPUs and APUs as well as the VPN technology WireGuard is only offered from Kernel 5.5 and fully supported from Kernel 5.6. With Ubuntu 20.10 and the Voyager 20.10 based on it, these new features will also be included in the French distribution.

Six editions are available

A total of six editions of the distribution optimized for AMD64 are available. In addition to the 1.9 GB main edition Voyager 20.04.1 LTS (ISO), the developers with Voyager 20.04.1 LTS GE (ISO) also offer a version with the current desktop Gnome 3.36 (Gresik") as well as a gamer edition with the pre-installed and Windows compatible runtime environment Wine 5.0 and a tablet edition.

With Voyager 10.1 (ISO), an offshoot based on Debian 10 ("Buster") is also available, which is primarily aimed at users who attach greater importance to a stable operating system.
