Top speed New Volvo are now limited to 180 km per hours

Volvo Cars to impose 180 kph speed limit on all cars.
How does my Volvo know the speed limit?

Newly produced Volvo cars have a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Volvo announced the project last year and is now implementing it. The automaker wants to get closer to the goal of zero serious injuries and fatalities.

How does my Volvo know the speed limit?

Volvo had already announced in March last year that it would deliver vehicles with a maximum speed limited to 180 km/h. At the end of last year, it was concretized that this step would be implemented in production from May 2020. Today there is confirmation that from now on every newly produced Volvo has the limited top speed.

Care Key for inexperienced drivers

In addition, every new Volvo will now be supplied as standard with the "Care Key", a special key for which further restrictions on top speed below 180 km/h can be set. According to Volvo, the key is intended for renting the car to other family members or young and inexperienced drivers.

Volvo sees itself in the responsibility

The speed limit has been controversial since the announcement last year, explains Volvo. However, the car manufacturer is convinced that he is obliged to continue the tradition of the safety pioneer, even if this means losing customers.

Volvo argues that if driving too fast over a certain speed, the assistance system of the car, whose passive safety technology and smart infrastructure design of the roads is no longer sufficient to prevent serious injuries and deaths. Speed restrictions exist in most Western countries, but frenzy is omnipresent and one of the main reasons for road deaths. Millions of people would get speeding tickets every year, despite the speed restrictions.

Volvo plans interior monitoring and geofencing

The top speed, which is limited to 180 km/h, is a first part of Volvo’s safety vision, which has now been implemented. Volvo sees drunkenness at the wheel and distractions from the smartphone as further security risks. The company is researching how cameras and sensors in the interior can detect both in the driver and, if necessary, react with warning signals or a speed reduction.

Volvo is also researching geofencing in the urban environment. This should serve both safety in the relevant areas and the efficiency of the vehicles. In future, the car will automatically comply with the prescribed speeds in defined zones such as kindergartens, hospitals or environmental zones.
