Goswami Tulsidas was born in 1532. There is a difference of opinion on the year and place of his birth. Some scholars consider his birthplace as Rajpur (Banda district) and some as Soron (Etah district). There is no concrete information regarding their parents. According to the materials and evidence obtained, his mother's name was Hulsi and father's name was Atmaram Dubey.

Tulsi's childhood was spent in severe suffering. He had to live alone, separated from his parents. Initially they used to live by begging. His guru's name was Narharidas. He was married to Ratnavali, daughter of Deen Bandhu Pathak. He loved his wife very much. He is said to have engaged in devotion to God by his teachings.

Goswami Tulsidas traveled to many pilgrimages like Ayodhya, Kashi, Chitrakoot etc. He went to Kashi and acquired knowledge of Vedas, Vedang, philosophy, history and Puranas from a scholar named Shesha Sanatan. Devotion to God and satsang became the main task of his life. For a long time they continued to sing Rama. He died in 1623 at Assi Ghat in Kashi.

He did not believe in any difference between knowledge and devotion.



Goswami Tulsidas was a great social reformer. He established many high ideals in the society. He established ideals in every sphere of life. The ideal form of duty towards family, mother, father, guru, husband, wife, brother and master etc. can be seen in their Ramcharit Manas. He has portrayed Lord Rama as Maryada Purushottam.
