Mac with ARM processor: Apple is to announce a move away from Intel to WWDC
Apple will reveal this big news at WWDC 2020 |
According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple plans to present its strategy for switching from Intel to its own system-on-a-chip on an ARM basis as early as the week after next. App developers should thus be given sufficient lead time before the first appropriately equipped products follow in 2021.
Apple will reveal this big news at WWDC 2020
On June 22, Apple’s keynote of the WWDC, this time conducted purely online, will take place. According to a recent report, Apple intends to present to the public for the first time the planned internal change from Intel processors to ARM chips with their own design under the project name Kalamata. Production-ready products based on their own processors are still months away, but app developers need a certain lead time to adapt their applications to the new platform. The WWDC is the right environment for this. The switch to own Apple chips would be the third, after the change from IBM’s Powerpc to Intel and before 1994 the first Macs with IBM instead of Motorola processors were presented at the WWDC 2005.
Rumors that Apple could rely on its own processors in Macbook, for example, have been circulating in the media world since 2012 - sometimes in more, sometimes in less credible form. In the last months, however, the hints have become more and more concrete, with only two weeks to the developer fair and information from credible source seems to be the announcement this time, however, actually imminent.
Independence of Intel’s Roadmap
Johny Srouji, Senior Vice President for Hardware Technologies, has been with Apple since 2008 and was responsible with his team for the development of the first own Socs A4 in the iPad and iPhone 4. Srouji has decided to move away from Intel after Intel’s annual gains in performance have been getting smaller. Apple’s engineers are concerned that Intel’s roadmap may delay future Mac updates, with its own chips providing independence from Intel.
Internal tests show that Apple processors have significant advantages over Intel, especially in the areas of graphics and AI performance. Apple’s processors are also more efficient, as people familiar with the manufacturer’s plans report. This could lead to thinner and lighter Apple notebooks in the future. As a potential candidate for a switch to ARM processors, the Macbook set in favor of the new Macbook Air is traded at 12 inches.
Production at TSMC in 5 nm
Three Apple processors for the Mac should be in the works, the first of them based on the A14, which is expected in the iPhone 12. The equipment of the chip developed for the Mac should correspond to the level of current Apple smartphone processors with among other things CPU, GPU and Neural Engine. The paver will once again be TSMC in the modern 5-nanometer node, which is also considered secure for smartphone Socs.
