As part of the "Ryzen 4000U/H Renoir" presentation, AMD promised up to 14 percent higher frame rates through the dynamic cooling and performance management of AMD Smartshift. As the manufacturer now confirmed, the Dell G5 15 SE with Ryzen 4000H and RX 5600M will be the only notebook with the technology in 2020.

Only the Dell G5 15 SE uses AMD Smartshift Apart from the Dell G5 15 SE, which has been released in Germany despite the plans that were still valid a few weeks ago, no notebook will use the Smartshift technology this year. This was announced by AMD’s chief architect for gaming solutions Frank Azor via Twitter. For 2021, however, players should have a larger selection of notebooks with AMD Smartshift.

Implementation of Smartshift requires a lot of effort

Smartshift makes sense on paper and in the presentation. There is still doubt, because the effort to implement it in the notebook is large, attested Today US of the technology already in the context of the introduction of Renoir. This assessment is strongly confirmed by the non-existent notebooks on the market.
It would therefore not be surprising if not even a handful of notebooks would use SmartShift within six months. AMD has only announced one in the form of a device from Dell, which is expected to appear in the second quarter.

Smartshift also anything but safe for 2021

It therefore remains questionable whether more gaming notebooks will make use of the dynamic feature in 2021. After all, it is still doubtful whether the additional effort for the few percent more performance of the additional discrete GPU is worthwhile. The results are only the best-case scenario and are usually in the single-digit percentage range.
