Samsung develops new security chip for smartphones

Samsung announced on Tuesday a new Secure Chip (SE) to protect private and sensitive data on mobile devices. The chip, named S3FV9RR, will be sold turnkey with security software.

Common Criteria, which certifies the security level of IT products from EAL0 to EAL7, 7 being the safest, has awarded the security chip an EAL CC certification (Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level) 6+. With the 6+ certification, Samsung explains that the SE chip has the highest rating to date for a mobile component.

According to Samsung, the new chip protects mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets during startup, but also for storage, mobile payment, as well as for other applications. It can also be used for electronic passports and electronic purses, and support secure hardware authentication of the device. It is also versatile, adds Samsung, as it can run independently of the security performance of a device’s main processor.

The SE chip will be available in the third quarter. Samsung first rolled out a similar SE chip in February, for the Galaxy S20 series, which was EAL 5+ CC certified at the time.
