Synology NAS for New 2020 DS920 DS420 DS720 DS220
Synology: These are the new NAS for 2020 - DS920 + / DS420 + / DS720 + / DS220 +
Synology is a manufacturer of NAS systems, which we are happy to rely on in our team. The details of the 2020 Plus Series diskstation lineup have already come to light thanks to data sheets - which Synology has now taken offline again - in the meantime. Normally, there is a successor for all models every two years: Synology plans two 4-Bay-NAS with DS920+ and DS420+, and two 2-Bay-NAS with DS720+ and DS220+.
The processor and memory of the predecessors were mainly revised, otherwise most of them remained the same. For my part, I was very happy to put my money on the plus series because of the many possibilities for dockers and the power reserves.
This is the Synology DS920+: Faster processor, faster memory.
Star of the lineup in this case is probably the DS920+, successor of the DS918+, which I also use at home. Four hard disks fit into this NAS, as well as two M2 Ssds - just like in the previous model. This capacity can be expanded by means of the DX517 expansion unit. The DS920+ has been released with the Intel Celeron J4125 a new quadcore processor with a 2 Ghz clock rate, with peaks of up to 2.7 Ghz. The 4 GB RAM can be extended, where DDR4 RAM is now used.
DS420+ 4-Bay der Plus-Serie
There was only a 400 of the Value Series in the 2010 lineup, now there is a plus model here. The somewhat weaker DS420+ also has four hard drives and two M2 SSD slots. There are limitations to both the processor and the memory: Synology only relies on a dual-core processor in the DS420+. The Intel Celeron J4025 with 2.0 Ghz up to 2.9 Ghz is installed here. With RAM, you can also use faster DDR4 RAM, but only 2GB here, which can also be extended.
Two new 2-Bay NAS are also planned for 2020: the DS720+, and the weaker DS220+.
DS720+: A 2-Bay with power
The DS720+ relies only on two hard disk drives and two M2 SSD slots. The Intel Celeron quadcore processor J4125 uses a fast, new processor, which is also used in the DS920+ and reaches up to 2.7 Ghz at the top. The RAM is set to 2GB of capacity, and DDR4 RAM is set here as well.
DS 220+: It’s in there
The weakest - and certainly the cheapest - NAS in the bundle, but for many certainly sufficient, is the DS220+. This is the successor to the DS218+, which, to my knowledge, was very popular. In contrast to the DS720+, the road is slightly weaker and there is no possibility of hot swapping the hard disks (the disk change in operation). The Intel Celeron J4025 with 2.0 Ghz, peak-rate clock of up to 2.9 Ghz, the same dual core processor as in the DS420+ is used as the drive.
No surprises, only product care has been operated here and everything has been brought up to date. The only surprise is that the DS420+ is now a 4-bay equivalent. With DS720+, the DS920+ comes with two hard disk inserts on top.
At last, Synology is introducing new, faster DDR4-RAM across the board. I think we should wait for the official performance. It should not take much longer and everything should now be known until the price and availability date.
