A recently published study in the Journal of Urology reports that low-fat diets can cause a decrease in testosterone levels in men. The findings were based on analysis of data on the 3,100 men who participated in the NH100 study. After accounting for other factors, the study found that a particularly low-fat diet um significant 'was associated with lower serum testosterone levels.
Based on NHANES data, 14 percent of 3,100 people reported eating a low-fat diet, compared to about 24 percent of men who ate a Mediterranean diet. Some participants met the criteria for a low-carb diet, meaning that the diet category was not included in this study.
Although serum testosterone levels were found to be lower in men in both diet groups, only the low-fat diet group was ultimately associated with lower testosterone levels after accounting for other possible factors. The lower levels were compared to the levels found in men who ate an unrestricted diet.
Avoiding a low fat diet may not be ideal for all men. According to researchers, reducing dietary fat for overweight or obese people comes with its own benefits - benefits that can reduce slightly lower testosterone levels.
Researchers say that normal-weight men want to avoid a low-fat diet because lifestyle changes are aimed at increasing serum testosterone levels. Apart from diet, these levels can be affected by things like exercise. At this time, according to the study, there is no 'best' diet recommendation for men suffering from low testosterone levels!
