Mercedes-Benz has brought a new concept car for CES 2020, which includes AVIRT inspired by James Cameron's epic "Avatar" film. Intended for the tangible themes of ecologically sound dynamics and the interaction of the passenger and their vehicle, the striking concept also uses lush green material.

This is certainly unlike some of Mercedes' current line-up vehicles, although it is completely design-wise. The automaker says that it was the symbiotic relationship in the 2009 sci-fi film that inspired unusual beauty with ship-shifting bodywork.

For example, the rear has 33 multi-directly movable "surface elements" as Mercedes describes them. Reminiscent of a reptile scales, they flutter and uproot them in a car to beckon communication. Mercedes also envisions them to add energy to EVs.

It will be stored in a Graphene-based organic battery cell, meaning that the Vision AVTR's power-pack will be completely rare earth and metal-free. In fact, the material used will be compostable, which will lead to a larger life-time concern than traditional batteries in electric vehicles.

They are not the only consideration for waste and supply chain. Mercedes has used vegan dynamic leather - a microfiber that promises environmental sustainability through its production cycle - for trim on the seats, while the floor uses carun wood. It is a fast-paced and ecologically stable rattan, which is harvested in Indonesia.

Through green is the interview technique. The Vision AVTR can move sideways in the same or opposite direction, by moving its front and rear axles, for example, approximately 30-degrees. Mercedes describes it as a "crab movement" and makes it particularly useful for agility through high areas such as congested cities.

Actually controlling the concept car is through multifunctional control in the center console. Put your hands on it, and the car recognizes the driver's breathing patterns and wakes up the drivetrain and other systems. Raise that hand, and the vision AVTR projects a menu of various controls on the palm. There is also a curved display in front of the passengers.

The actual functionality falls heavily into the lore of the film "Avatar" and especially the idea of family and collective groups. If, for example, the car spots that a family is onboard, it will automatically start showing demonstrations for parents in the front seats, so that they can monitor what the children are doing in the back. The pulse of the parents is replicated by the light pattern on the back of their seats, which Mercedes says should give "a sense of connectivity and security".

Then there is the "Magic Pool", the Vision AVTR's version of the rear seat display. It offers various sports and augmented reality experiences, tailored to young travelers, such as flagging off interesting scenes.

Is any of it leading to production? Probably not, at least not in its present form. Certainly we can expect greater use of recycled materials and ecologically sound trim, and Mercedes is one of many vehicle drivers exploring graphene-based battery technology.

Nevertheless, Mercedes has its own Ambition 2039 project, announced last year. Back in May, it said it aimed to have a carbon-neutral new passenger car fleet in 20 years, and plug-in hybrids or pure-electric vehicles make up more than half of its sales by 2030. This view may be the AVTR concept. Not making it for production, but some topics that represent a more conscious form of mobility, seem to be integrated into the future roadmap of Mercedes.
