WLAN amplifier in practice: Telekom Speed Home WiFi

Telekom Speed Home Wifi: Equipment

Telekom Speed Home Wifi consists of up to six mesh devices. One of them serves as a base and is connected via LAN cable to an existing modem router. Alternatively, the Telekom Speedport Smart 3 or Speedport Pro can be used as a mesh base. Each device has two LAN ports with Gigabit speed and a button for quick and easy setup via WPS connection. Speed Home Wifi supports Telekom Magentatv in Ultra HD and 4K quality.

Telekom Speed Home Wifi: Wifi technology

The mesh repeaters transmit theoretically with n-standard (2.4-gigahertz band) at up to 450 megabits per second (Mbps) and with ac-standard (5-gigahertz band) at up to 1,300 Mbps. Thanks to the Access-Point-Steering mesh function, terminals are always connected to the most powerful repeater - for example, the smartphone is seamlessly passed on from one repeater to the next, For example, if you move from the living room on the ground floor to the study on the first floor. Thanks to band steering, Speed Home Wifi automatically pushes terminals onto the faster frequency band. Since it is capable of crossband repeating, the data can change the frequency band on the way from the router via the repeater to the terminal (and vice versa). Without the function the speed would be halved, because then the same frequency is used for the entire route.

Telekom Speed Home Wifi: Wifi speed

In the practice test, the repeaters really stepped on the gas - at least partially. They managed up to 896 Mbps in sending and 756 Mbps in receiving via WLAN-ac - a great performance with which Telekom Speed Home Wifi does not have to hide behind other fast top models such as the AVM Fritzrepeater 2400 or the TP-Link RE650! In the WLAN-n standard, however, the situation was different: the performance of up to 123 Mbps in transmission and 215 Mbps in reception was mediocre at best.

Telekom Speed Home Wifi: Setup

Setting up Telekom Speed Home Wifi is easy. If you are using a Speedport Smart 3 or Speedport Pro as a router, you simply have to press the WPS buttons on the router and repeater and wait a little while. The repeater then takes over the router’s wireless name and wireless password. A LED on the repeater reveals whether it should be placed closer to the router to optimize the connection. If you do not have one of these routers, you can simply connect the first Speed Home Wifi to your modem router via LAN cable. The repeater registers the connection by itself and adjusts itself accordingly.Further Speed Home Wifi can be easily added via WPS. If you prefer a set-up assistant, you will find it in the app "Meinmagenta" (Android and iOS).

Telekom Speed Home Wifi: Conclusion and alternatives

Telekom Speed Home Wifi is easy to set up and is equipped with clever features that ensure a good Wi-Fi connection. The Wi-Fi speed was very high in the ac standard, but via Wi-Fi the repeater weakened considerably. Since the Telekom routers and repeaters are ideally matched, Speed Home Wifi is a good option for Speedport owners. Fritzbox owners ride better with the AVM Fritzrepeater 3000 or the Fritzrepeater 2400. The TP-Link RE650 and the Netgear Nighthawk X6S (EX8000) also performed well in the test.
