Schenker VIA 14 L20: New Notebook gets Tiger Lake and TB4
VIA 14 in the 14-inch |
Launch of Intel CPU generation Tiger Lake, which is primarily intended for economical and very compact notebooks, Schenker has also presented a first flagship with the updated VIA 14 in the 14-inch class. With magnesium chassis, the notebook is 1.1 kg light and should run for 14 hours.
Tiger Lake CPU and Xe GPU for increased efficiency
The VIA 14 updated to Intel Tiger Lake (UP3) runs at Schenker under the product ID SVI14L20 and carries in the product name the addition L20, which stands as a demarcation to previous Ultrabooks for Late 2020. The previous generation used Intel Comet Lake-U. The biggest innovations with Intel Tiger Lake are the improved 10 nm production with increased efficiency and thus lower energy consumption. At the top, this means higher clock rates and the Xe-named new graphics unit.
NVMe SSDs with PCIe 4.0 are supported
The Intel Core i7-1165G7 installed in the Schenker VIA 14 L20 offers a TDP classification of 12 to 28 watts in addition to four cores with SMT at a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a boost of up to 4.7 GHz and as iGPU the Iris Xe Graphics G7. With which TDP Schenker operates the CPU is not yet known.A dedicated graphics card is not offered. The main memory is 8 GB DDR4-3200 from the factory, which are soldered. In addition, additional RAM can be retrofitted in a SO-DIMM slot.In total, up to 40 GB are supported. Two M.2 slots are planned for mass storage in the newly launched VIA 14 of the year 2020, one of which is compatible with faster PCIe 4.0 drives with up to 64 Gbit/s. The second slot also has four data lines, but can only handle PCIe-3.0 SSDs (32 Gbit/s).
Three out of four parts of the chassis are made of magnesium
In the chassis of the VIA 14, almost completely made of a magnesium alloy (AZ91D), the Schenker with dimensions of 322 216.8 16.5 mm (W D H) with a weight of 1,Measured at 1 kg, there is a particularly economical display in a plastic frame, according to the manufacturer.X-inch display should require less energy than usual
By using an IPS power saving panel at the average brightness level at 150 cd/m², the matte screen should be able to cope with an energy requirement of only one watt - about half as much as with conventional models. Schenker estimates the maximum brightness of the 14-inch screen with full HD resolution (1,920 1,080 pixels) to be 300 cd/m². It should cover 98 percent of the sRGB color space. In combination with the efficiently trimmed processors and a comparatively large battery with 73 watt hours for the class, the slim Ultrabook is expected to run for up to 14 hours. The exchangeable energy store is charged by means of a 65 watt power supply, which is to fill the battery to 90 percent in 1.5 hours via the quick charge function.
Thunderbolt 4 via USB-C and optional with LTE

In addition to the CPU upgrade, Schenker has also implemented the other innovations of the Intel platform. Thus, in addition to PCIe 4.0, Thunderbolt 4 is also offered, which allows data exchange with up to 40 Gbit/s. In addition, additional devices can be loaded via the same Type-C interface via Power Delivery or image signals can be output as usual for the standard (DisplayPort 1.4b). In addition, a full HDMI output (HDMI 2.0b), a microSD card reader and twice USB Type A (1 USB 3.2 Gen2, 1 USB 3.2 Gen1) are installed on the flanks of the housing. The connection to networks takes place via Wi-Fi 6 module (WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax), which also has Bluetooth 5.0. In addition, the VIA 14 L20 can also be optionally purchased with an LTE module. The equipment is rounded off by a microphone with noise reduction, stereo speakers and a white illuminated keyboard.
Available for pre-order end of September, end of October
Schenker is offering the revised VIA 15 L20 in the initial configuration based on Tiger Lake in its own shop for pre-order from the end of September for 1,247 euros. At the end of October, according to current plans, delivery is to begin. A cheaper version with Intels Core i5-1135G7 will follow at a later date, details on the price difference are not yet available.
