Deutsche Telekom expands 5G network to 3,000 towns

Deutsche Telekom has announced that 40 million people in Germany can now use 5G via dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) and passive 3G antennas at 2,100 Mhz. With a total of around 30,000 5G-capable antennas in over 3,000 cities and municipalities, the company reaches around 50 percent of the population.

5G for half the population

Only in mid-June, the network operator from Bonn had informed that in the context of the 5G-Boost action, the total number of 5G-capable antennas could be increased to 12,000 pieces, whereby the use of DSS for the parallel operation of 5G and LTE via the existing 3GInfrastructure already had a not entirely insignificant share in Deutsche Telekom’s 5G expansion at that time.

Over the past five weeks, the company has prepared 18,000 additional antennas for 5G and integrated them into the existing network. According to Deutsche Telekom, this applies to major cities such as Frankfurt or Munich as well as smaller municipalities in Upper Bavaria and Saxony. 5G is now also available on Germany’s highest mountain, the 2,962-meter-high Zugspitze.

Gigabit at 3.6 Ghz for the time being only in large cities

Until the end of the year, Deutsche Telekom intends to provide two thirds of the local population - also with the help of DSS - with fast mobile Internet via the 5G network.

However, the 50 percent is no reason for us to rest.The 5G expansion continues with the same intensity. Two-thirds of the population is our next target, and we want to achieve that this year.

In rural areas, the new mobile communications standard currently reaches speeds of up to 225 Mbit/s on the 3G spectrum and 2,100 Mhz on the 5G band n1 in the downlink, while in small cities 5G can be used at 600 to 800 Mbit/s.

At the same time, 5G with gigabit speed at 3.6 Ghz is currently being offered in eight German cities. Here, too, Deutsche Telekom wants to expand further, in parallel to DSS. Back in 2018, the Group presented a program that envisages a coverage of 5G for 99 percent of the population and 90 percent of the German territory by 2025.
