Kioxia PM6 First 24G SAS SSD for servers launched

Designed for modern IT infrastructures, 24G SAS doubles the data throughput of its predecessor
KIOXIA's new PM6 Series of enterprise SAS SSDs is built on 24G SAS technology

Kioxia is bringing the first server SSD with the fourth generation of the SAS interface to the market. SAS-4 alias SAS 24G offers a throughput rate of 2,400 MB/s.The Kioxia PM6 series should reach 4,300 MB/s via line bundling. The 2.5-inch Ssds offer up to 30.72 TB of storage space.

SAS 24G comes with double throughput

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is an interface for data carriers such as SSD and HDD, which is mainly used in the server area. SAS 12G with 12 Gbit/s symbol rate was followed by SAS 24G with 22.5 Gbit/s symbol rate. Although SAS 24G was introduced almost four years ago, availability in the market had already been targeted for 2020. There is backward compatibility with SAS 12G.

SAS 24G also brings the following new features:

  • "Packet-Mode" Structures
  • 24G Link Training
  • Forward Error Correction (FEC)
  • Active Phy Transmitter Adjustment (APTA)
  • Persistent Connections

The Kioxia PM6 series is based on 96-layer 3D TLC-NAND and includes various designs: Models with 1 Drive Write Per Day (DWPD) are designed for read-intensive tasks, for mixed workloads with 3 DWPD and for high write volumes with 10 DWPD. Two SAS connections are available for more performance through channel bundling or redundancy, by connecting to two host adapters (dual porting).

In addition, Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory) advertises a bug fix if two NAND-Dies fail simultaneously. For further information please refer to the product pages for the Enterprise Ssds, on which no Kioxia PM6 can be found yet. The PM6 SSD should first be sampled by partners.

Kioxia’s CD6 and CM6 series server Ssds with Pcie 4.0, which should reach up to 6,900 MB/s, provide even more performance.
