Gaming Ampere New rumors about GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080
Gaming Ampere New rumors

Last week, there were new speculations about Nvidia’s next-gen graphics cards for players based on Ampere, but this week it stayed quiet - until now. The specs for the Geforce RTX 3090, RTX 3080 and a new Titan have appeared on Twitter.

The fact that Nvidia’s "gaming amp" will actually look like this continues to be unconfirmed. However, the rumors come from no unknown "Katcorgi" was already right in the past. And the specifications also roughly match what you have heard so far about the new graphics cards.

The alleged specifications

For example, the biggest GPU of the player models, the G102, will be on a new Titan RTX (GA102-400-A1), a Geforce RTX 3090 (GA102-300-A1) and a Geforce RTX 3080 (GA102-200-Kx-A1) - previously it was said that the large GPU would be used on three almost identical Pcbs. The new Titan RTX offers 4,608 shaders. The memory expansion should again be a whopping 24 GB of the type GDDR6X, the memory speed is specified with 17 Gbps. At a 384 bit wide interface this would result in a bandwidth of 816 GB/s, at 672 GB/s comes the Titan of the Turing generation.

The alleged specifications of the new amp gaming GPUs

The Geforce RTX 3090 with 5.248 Alus (82 Sms) should be hardly weaker than the flagship. On the contrary, the memory speed should be at a whopping 21 Gbps - a value that has been haunting the rumor mill for some time.

Doubts arise with the memory clock of the 3090"

In connection with an alleged storage expansion of 12 GB, however, doubts arise. Because then the Geforce RTX 3090 would also have to have a 384 bit interface, with which the memory bandwidth would be 1,008 GB/s. If the Geforce RTX 3090 would not be significantly slowed down by the GPU clock, it could be partly faster than the new Titan. This is hardly conceivable, because then the Titan would only have the storage expansion as an advantage. Other rumors have so far spoken of 11 GB on a 352 bit wide interface, that sounds quite realistic.

Either the memory clock of the Titan is too low, the RTX 3090 is too high, or both values are simply twisted. Although it is not excluded that the double memory expansion brings disadvantages in the frequencies - if Nvidia would have to set for example on twice as dense packed memory modules, which simply do not allow a higher clock - but does not fit a Titan.

The temporary amp access RTX 3080 should still have 4,352 activated shading units, which would be 68 Sms. The storage speed should be 19 Gbps, the storage expansion at 10 GB. Thus, the memory interface should be 320 bit wide and the bandwidth should be 760 GB/s.

The RTX 3080 would make a big leap

In terms of raw performance, the Geforce RTX 3080 made a much bigger jump than the Geforce RTX 2080 than the Geforce RTX 3090 and the new Titan compared to the Geforce RTX 2080 Ti and the old Titan. This fits the GA102 GPU on the Geforce RTX 3080. The Geforce RTX 2080 had to be surprisingly satisfied with the TU104 and thus only "the second largest GPU.

The GPU showdown will take place in a few months

Whether the rumors actually correspond to the truth will probably be clarified in the course of September or October. Because then not only Nvidia’s gaming amps will appear, but also AMD’s competing graphics cards based on RDNA2.
