Qualcomm 5G moves into the Snapdragon 400 series

About two years after the announcement of the Snapdragon 855 with support of the 5G standard via the externally connected X50 modem, the new mobile radio standard is to move into the Snapdragon 400 and thus smallest Snapdragon family. Several smartphone manufacturers want to install the new chip next year.

The IFA 2020 in Berlin opened this morning
Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon with the announcement of 5G support on all Snapdragon platforms. Although Amon did not deal with individual solutions in detail, which will only be presented later in the year, it presented the company’s rough roadmap.

Motorola, Oppo and Xiaomi on board

This includes the introduction of a new Snapdragon 400 chip, which will support 5G for the smallest family for the first time. At the beginning of 2021, an appropriately equipped system-on-chip is to be ready for use, and numerous smartphone manufacturers have already made their commitments. Among the first supporters are Motorola, Oppo and Xiaomi, who want to launch their new devices in the course of the first quarter. Qualcomm plans to release details of the new Snapdragon 400 chip later this year.

5G-capable SoCs since the end of 20

With the availability of 5G in the Snapdragon 400 family, the new mobile standard is now available in all Snapdragon increments. The 200 Mobile Platform is not part of the Snapdragon family. In detail, the following solutions are offered with the Snapdragon 855 since the end of 2018.

  • Snapdragon 800 series: Snapdragon 865 Plus, Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 855
  • Snapdragon 700 series: Snapdragon 768G, Snapdragon 765G, Snapdragon 765
  • Snapdragon 600 series: Snapdragon 690
  • Snapdragon 400 series: Snapdragon 4xx from early 2021

Further details on the Snapdragon 400 with 5G support are expected at the latest at the Qualcomm Tech Summit in December. Then it should also be clear which 5G modem will be used and whether it is an integrated modem like the 600 and 700 chips or an external one like the 800 family.
