ZTE has presented the first smartphone with a sub-display camera, which is also to be manufactured in series and available at retail outlets. The selfie camera is positioned under the display, so that recesses in the display, a notch or a pop-up camera are unnecessary.

Display above the camera slightly darker

During the presentation of the Axon 20 5G, ZTE does not go into detail where the 32-megapixel front camera is placed under the display and it is not visible on the official images. Only a video in which a tester points a flashlight at the display reveals the sensor at the extreme upper edge in the middle. When the display is switched on, the area of the camera is also easy to recognize, depending on the image content and the brightness set, as the display is slightly darker in this area. Nevertheless, the result looks quite good, when presented by ZTE, the camera is not recognizable at first. It is not yet known whether the pixel density above the sensor is lower than on the rest of the display to allow light to pass through to the sensor, which would explain the lower brightness and slight color gradation. ZTE speaks of a special pixel matrix that is used.

Apart from the camera, the ZTE Axon 20 5G uses an OLED display with 6.92 inches and a resolution of 2,460 1,080 pixels. The SoC is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, which provides ZTE 6 gigabytes of memory and 128 gigabytes of internal data memory. The battery has a capacity of 4,220 mAh. The Snapdragon 765G is the gaming variant of the Snapdragon 765, which can also use an integrated 5G modem, so that the Axon 20 5G supports this wireless standard.

Four cameras on the back

The main camera uses a 64-megapixel sensor with three additional camera sensors for 120-degree wide-angle, macro and 8, 2 and 2-megapixel depth detection. In addition to WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, the smartphone offers Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, A-GPS/BeiDou/GLONASS, an accelerometer, a brightness sensor and ambient light sensor, a compass and a gyroscope. The ZTE Axon 5G measures 172.1 77.9 7.98 mm at a weight of 198 g.

From November also launch in Market

The ZTE Axon 20 5G is expected to be available in Market in November 2020 via Media Markt, Saturn and Amazon. Prices for German trade do not yet exist. In China, the ZTE Axon 20 5G is to be traded at a price of 2,198 yuan, which equates to around 275 euros. With 8 GB of RAM, it costs 2,498 yuan, around 310 euros, and with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of memory 2798 yuan, around 350 euros.

Xiaomi next year with under-display camera smartphone

Xiaomi introduced the third generation of its under-display camera technology just a few days ago, in which smaller subpixels allow more light to hit the camera sensor without having to reduce the pixel density above the camera sensor. A smartphone from Xiaomi with this technology to be launched next year.
