As Lenovo announced, the manufacturer is currently having the Thinkpad and the Thinkstation-type workstation officially certified for Linux. In addition to the developers, data specialists should primarily be addressed.

Lenovo uses Linux in its own portfolio

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and the business OS Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.2 and their successors are to be used as free operating systems. Lenovo had previously announced a cooperation with Fedora and the Fedora Workstation 32 operating system of the same name.

The compact Thinkpad P1 G2 with professional Quadro-GPU and the powerful Thinkpad P53 as well as the light Thinkpad X1 Gen8 with Comet Lake-U in a Fedora Edition should be available directly from Fedora in the future.

Officially certified mobile and stationary workstations now follow directly through Lenovo and their portfolio, as Rob Herman, General Manager and Executive Director Workstation & Client AI Group at Lenovo explained.

Already available in the United States

In the United States, business customers have the option of already selected configurations of the ThinkPad and ThinkStation series with Linux. You can choose from Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu LTS with long-term support from Canonical, but in this case it is expanded to include support from Lenovo, which itself provides drivers, software, and BIOS and firmware updates for its professional systems.

Lenovo promises equivalent support for its Linux PCs and notebooks compared to the Windows versions and also a dedicated Linux support forum.

Broad portfolio with Nvidia Quadro RTX

In addition to the ThinkPad P53 already known from the Fedora project, Lenovo is planning with numerous desktop workstations, from the ThinkStation P330 up to the ThinkStation P920. Professional graphics cards of the Nvidia Quadro RTX type based on Turing are also available.

Lenovo also announced that it could offer its entire portfolio of ThinkStations and the ThinkPad-P series optionally with Linux.

Our entire portfolio of ThinkStation and ThinkPad P Series workstations will now be certified via both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu LTS.

Dell also offers Linux

Lenovo catches up with Dell, which offers its XPS 13 (9300) with Intel Ice Lake in a Developer Edition, also with Ubuntu LTS, which, however, is a good deal below the Lenovo with an MSRP of $ 999. Classifies portfolios. In Germany, however, there are so far only two Linux configurations of the new XPS 13 available from 1,800 euros.

In addition to Dell and Lenovo, HP also offers selected stationary and virtual Linux workstations from the cloud.

The company has not yet answered whether and when European business customers from Lenovo will have the option of Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
