Ford and Lincoln suddenly not want Rivian electric platform anymore
Ford and Lincoln cancel Rivian-powered electric vehicle due to the pandemic
In 2019, Ford put another half a billion dollars in the startup.
The electric-powered Ford Lincoln is to come, but its platform will no longer be developed by the Startup Rivian. In January 2020, both companies confirmed the plans.
In April 2019, Ford invested half a billion dollars in Rivian. In January 2020, car manufacturers announced that they would invest more than USD 11.5 billion in the electrification of their vehicles. This includes the Mustang Mach-E, which will soon be ready for sale, and an electrical version of the F-150 pick-up.
Electrek reported that Ford had announced in the intranet that it was dealing with a "rapidly changing environment". When reviewing the business and product plans, Ford decided that it would be better to move away from the Rivian platform. However, the partnership between companies should continue.
Rivian has to postpone production because of Corona
We can only speculate on the reasons. The fact is that Rivian had to announce in early April 2020 that the first deliveries of its electric vehicles were delayed until 2021. Because of the corona crisis, Rivian had to close the plant and send its workers home.
Moreover, the start of production in 2021 does not necessarily mean the beginning of the year. Even before the pandemic, Rivian did not intend to deliver the first electric pick-ups until the end of 2020. These are also based on the platform originally planned by Ford for the Lincoln.
